 Dream Happening! Stevie Wonder and extended family celebrated his daughter Aisha’s birthday recently at Vibrato, one of his favorite places for both food and music. After enjoying their dinner and scheduled artist Howard Hewett’s inspired, engaging performance, Stevie graced the stage, where he tickled the ivories (and ebonies) of the gorgeous Yamaha grand piano and sang a magical solo set. This came as a happy bonus to the surprised guests, a knowing, lucky group for whom an evening at Vibrato often feels like this-- like an enchanted private party; an artistic happening. Stevie topped off this mesmerizing musical interlude with a wholehearted dedication to “the most important person in my life, my daughter Aisha” and then sang You Are The Sunshine Of My Life for her birthday with such feeling that he entranced all present with his genuine gift-- opening each heart, touching each soul. |

 As the sentimental mists
gathered, he expertly modulated into his birthday song, soon joined
by a small choir of family and friends around the stage softly (and
beautifully) singing the haunting
Happy Birthday
anthem that
Wonder originally wrote for Martin Luther King’s birthday. You could
feel the love and respect flowing throughout the intimate room.
Then, rejoined by Hewett and the band, wonderful Stevie Wonder, at the height of his seasoned artistic powers, brought the show home to a stirring, heartfelt ovation. Dream happening? Just another night at Herb Alpert’s Vibrato… |

Quincy Jones presented amazing young Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodriguez, attended by will.i.am, Josh Groban, Quincy, Billy Dee Williams, Alan and Marilyn Bergman and many more; a Hunt Cellars Winemaker's Dinner with brilliant cult wine maker David Hunt (above) with music by the great Theo Saunders Sextet; phenomenal Arturo Sandoval's surprise visit to solo with the Bob Mintzer Big Band! |
