The Louisiana rooted, Los Angeles based, Mudbug Brass Band is dedicated to the "Second Line" tradition of the Crescent City, drawing from New Orleans traditional Jazz, R&B, Funk & Mardi Gras. In 2011, this 8-piece brass ensemble was formed by three Louisiana natives, who's sole purpose was to entertain crowds throughout Southern California. Since then, Los Angeles Magazine has hailed Mudbug as a "Must-See LA Show for 2014" and a "Can't Be Missed" band for the 2015 Make Music Pasadena Festival! They made "Best of LA" CBS: Los Angeles two years running and the "Don't Miss List" of LA Downtown News when they performed for the "Metro Presents" Concert Series.
Whether on the stage or in the streets, Mudbug has participated in many high-profile events including the grand reopening of UCLA's Pauley Pavilion and the 75th Anniversary of LA's Union Station. The Los Angeles Times featured them when they led the “Walk the Talk” parade through Skid Row, commemorating the Los Angeles Poverty Department. Mudbug has also supported causes for the Motion Picture Television Fund, Champion for Children's Benefit as well as corporations like YouTube, Hyundai, Cedars Sinai and Tastemade Network.
The Mudbug Brass Band is proud to have followed in the footsteps of fellow New Orleans musicians by spending their Sunday afternoons playing residencies at restaurants and their Friday nights playing Taverns and Saloons. They have performed for the LSU So Cal Alumni Crawfish Boil since 2014 and the Venice Beach Mardi Gras Parade since 2011. The result of their hard work is an explosion of sound that is authentic and infectious. This was evident early on when they recorded a number of New Orleans Traditional Jazz standards during the UCLA Sessions at the Herb Alpert School of music.
Mudbug's first original release, “Are you with me” was self-produced and is an anthem joining everyone together through social awareness. It features a call and response vocal and funky New Orleans backbeat, which is indigenous to New Orleans music. On Fat Tuesday 2015, Brian Gilleece of Cinterra Pictures shot the video for "Are you with me," capturing a day in the life of the band as they made their way through Union Station, Villains Tavern and Skid Row of downtown Los Angeles.
With over 150 appearances to date, The Mudbug Brass Band is well-seasoned but only getting started! In 2016, they have already performed for the 23rd Annual Long Beach Crawfish Festival, the Skirball Summer Concert Series and was featured on ESPN LA Sportscenter. Mudbug is constantly building momentum and will continue to spread the musical culture of New Orleans from the studio and the stage.
