Mike Gurrola began his musical journey at the young age of seven when he was inspired by a classmate to learn how to play the violin. He studied violin privately and played in school orchestras until the age of twelve when he was encouraged to make the switch to the string bass by his middle school orchestra conductor. He later attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and studied privately for several years with David Young, Dennis Trembly, and John Clayton. His performing career became so busy by the time he graduated from high school that he chose to decline offers from schools such as the Juilliard school in Manhattan, to stay in Los Angeles and make music with as many musicians as he could while continuing his studies with John Clayton and others. He is now completing a degree in ethnomusicology at UCLA. Mike has performed with many well known and sought after jazz artists the likes of which include Eric Reed, Jeff Hamilton, Harold Mabern, Pharaoh Sanders, Joe Farnsworth, Benny Green, and many others. Mike has performed in venues both nationally and internationally and in April 2017 he performed with the Eric Reed quartet at the Village Vanguard in NYC.
