I am Paul Lakatos, born on 31th October 1967 in Vásárosnamény. As member of a gypsy musician dynasty,I play guitar in an autodidactic way.
When I was 14, I was playing in the world music band of-famous gypsy band leader Sándor Járóka Jr. Through this time my knowledge of music and playing guitar has been developed to the highest level. I was 18 years old, when I was admitted to the Conservatory of Jazz, where my teacher was Gyula Babos who is an excellent pedagogue and worldwide known jazz guitar player. The other master was Andor Kovacs who was also a celebrated gypsy jazz guitar player. I lived for a short time in Canada, where I have played together with Dave Young jazz contra bassist and many other excellent musicians too.
In 2000 I have met George Benson, the greatest jazz guitar player ever at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. It was a great honor for me to play with him at the jam session after the concert. We are still very close friends today.
George speaks extremely highly of Mr Lakatos. Like in a recent interview he was quoted to say...
Question-"As a jazz guitarist you followed in the footsteps of Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery. Who do you think will follow in your wake in the jazz world?
There are a lot of guitar players I like. Norman Brown and Jonathan Butler. They've got guitar players all over the world. There's a guitar player in Hungary I like. His name's Paul Lakatos. He plays guitar like breathing."
