Freda Payne

Cover: $30 // Show: 7:30pm

Though best known for her 1970 R&B crossover smash hit "Band of Gold," Freda Payne has always first and foremost been a jazz singer.  Now, as iconic in 2014 for her timeless beauty and stage appeal as she is for her artistic versatility, Freda Payne remains among music's brightest-shining stars.

Her latest album, Come Back To Me Love, marks not only a return to the big band and strings-laden classics from her mid-'60s beginnings with Impulse! but also marks a return to her hometown of Detroit. That makes this 14-song album featuring Grammy® Award-winner Bill Cunliffe's musical arrangements—from the vibes-kissed Kenny Rankin waltz "Haven't We Met" to the lonely evening fireplace musings of "Lately"—a beautiful homecoming.

Starting her career with the Jimmy Wilkins Big Band at age 14, Payne went on to perform at the Apollo Theater in Harlem alongside Billy Eckstine, backed by Quincy Jones and His Orchestra, comedian Redd Foxx, and the dance team Coles & Atkins.  She also graced the stage with Duke Ellington for two nights in Pittsburgh, after which he composed "Blue Piano" just for her. Asked if much has changed since those first 1963 jazz recordings, she marvels, "In '63 I was nervous as hell—uptight and pushing too hard to be perfect. This time I felt like I was in heaven. I was in Capitol Records' Studio A with 40 musicians, singing over impeccable arrangements. I was much more relaxed and secure within myself." Freda Payne's training and experience render her a rare vocal artist who is stylistically beyond category.

Brenna Whitaker

Cover: $25 // Show: 8:00pm

Brenna’s voice is so full and powerful it is like there is a heavy-set southern gospel singer bottled up in her diaphragm. To say she has pipes would be an understatement, she is a plumber working those pipes and making them squeal, rattle, and roar. She has been performing since the age of 11 and to see her comfort on stage it is no surprise.

"This brazen blond beauty is not afraid to follow her instincts and take risks; playing gospel in whiskey bars and rearranging theme tunes at will. Whitaker’s voice will make you remember why the classics endure.” -- The Sun

"Brenna Whitaker takes the stage, takes control and takes your breath away.  Not to be missed.”  The L.A. Weekly

"Brenna is one of the finest singers of our generation." -- Michael Buble

"No one is rising more quickly than Miss Brenna Whitaker. The Kansas City native evokes thoughts of a contemporary Peggy Lee or Etta James."

Billy Valentine

Cover: $20 // Shows: 8:00pm

Multitalented vocalist Billy Valentine's varied career has taken him across the United States, throughout the many countries of Europe and even to Oman.

Lately, he's been frequenting local Los Angeles clubs, such as Café Cordiale in Sherman Oaks, and both The Vic and The Casa Del Mar Hotel in Santa Monica. Since its premiere in 2004, His glorious singing voice can be heard every week on the television series, Boston Legal, from the theme song right through to the end of each and every episode.

Billy began his professional career as a solo artist opening for such luminaries as Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack in the 1970s. He also was the lead singer for the group Young Holt Unltd.

Billy and his brother John went on to form the duo The Valentine Brothers, touring and producing four albums from 1975-1989. The duo co-wrote the memorable hit single "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)," which appeared on their album First Take. "Money's Too Tight" gained widespread popularity in 1986 when it was released as a single, and on video, performed by Simply Red.

Billy's singing career quickly expanded into theatre and film. In 1977, he toured with the first national touring company of The Wiz as one of its main orchestra voices, staying with the show for over 3 years. In the mid 1980s, he sang lead vocals for the documentary, Champions Forever, a film about Ali, Frazier and Foreman. In the early 1990s, Billy was the singing voice for the lead vocalist character in Robert Townsend's feature film, The Five Heartbeats. He joined the show It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues, performing at the Geffen Theatre in Los Angeles and the San Diego Rep in the late '90s.

Billy's singing talents have also been in demand as a demo recording artist for such high-profile producers and writers as Gerry Goffin, Mark Isham, Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

Keeping pace with his expanding singing career, Billy has written numerous songs, collaborating with such greats as Will Jennings and co-writing three songs on the Neville Bros. Family Groove album. He also co-wrote the title track "My World" for the incomparable Ray Charles.

During the '70s and '80s, Billy tried his hand at producing with several projects, including "Crazy For You," by Sly Stone and Jesse Johnson, two songs on the feature film soundtrack, Soul Man, and the album Vesta from Vesta Williams for A&M Records.

As a musical artist, Billy feels he has been most profoundly influenced by the soulful talents of Otis Redding, Nat King Cole and Carmen MacRae.

Nan Schwartz

Nan Schwartz

Cover: $30 // Show: 8:00pm

It is perhaps no surprise that Grammy winner, 5-time Grammy  nominee, and seven-time Emmy nominee Nan Schwartz is considered a pioneer of women composers. Her family legacy includes a father who played with the Glenn Miller band and performed on nearly every Frank Sinatra recording. And it includes a mother who performed such chart-topping hits as “Chicago” and “On the Sunny Side of the Street” for musical legend Tommy Dorsey before going on to work as a studio singer for Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Judy Garland, Henry Mancini, and Sonny and Cher, among others.

But Nan Schwartz didn’t immediately set out to follow in her parent’s footsteps, instead opting for a career in television production. A skiing accident was the catalyst that brought her back to the world of music. While on the mend, she began private studies to pursue her secret ambition: film scoring, a profession previously inaccessible to women. Utilizing her lifelong devotion to music and her experience studying piano and singing professionally from an early age, Nan was able to forge a successful career that saw her compose, arrange, and orchestrate music for countless memorable films and television series, including In the Heat of the Night and Argo.

Award recognition quickly followed Nan’s pioneering efforts in the industry and eventually led to a Grammy win for arrangements for Natalie Cole. (2009, “Here’s That Rainy Day.”)

A proponent of melodic, harmonically-rich music, Nan’s unique style has made its mark in film, television, the recording industry, and symphonic performance. Nan’s diversity and depth of experience in all musical venues – themes, songs, episodic television, and film – from synthesizer projects to hundred-piece orchestral settings, have helped create her sterling reputation as one of the world’s most talented composers.

Highlights from Nan's diverse career include:

--stylistic scores for a number of television movies and series including "In The Heat of The Night."  Nan has earned 7 Emmy nominations for TV composition, including an unprecedented 3 in one year alone (for TV score, TV movie score, and song).

--Grammy Award winning arrangements for Natalie Cole, arrangements for the London Symphony Orchestra (2013 Grammy nominated), Gianmarco and Amy Dickson (2014 Grammy nominations), the Berlin-based Deutsche Symphonie Orchestra,  John Williams and the Boston Pops Orchestra (Grammy nominated), Madeleine Peyroux, Raul Midon, Ray Charles, jazz clarinetist Eddie Daniels, jazz vocalists Mark Murphy and Kevin Mahogany, opera singer/crossover artist Thomas Quastoff, trumpeters Arturo Sandoval and Till Brønner

--Teaching at the Hollywood Music Workshop in Baden, Austria.

--a CD series for Warner Bros. Discovery Records entitled "Jazz at the Movies."

--symphony commissions from The New American Orchestra, Doc Severinsen, and The Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra.  Her latest opus, "Angels Among Us," is a 15 minute tone poem for solo trumpet and symphony orchestra.  5 of her symphonic pieces, including “Angels” will be recorded in Vienna, Austria in June 2016.

--songwriting, including songs for the 2012 Supreme Master Gala, the Emmy-nominated "All The Days" as well as numerous songs for the Latin market.

--conducting orchestras in America and Europe, including the Deutsches Symphonie Orchestra of Berlin.

--Orchestration on the films "Argo, “The Life of Pi,” “Godzilla,” "Rise of the Guardians,” "My Week With Marilyn," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, Pt. 1,"  "Julie and Julia," "My One and Only,” "Benjamin Button," "Gracie," "The Express," "Uptown Girls," "Mulan II," "Firewall," "Freedom Writers," "Bobby," "Lions for Lambs," "Next," among others.

Four multilingual singers bring an unparalleled diversity to their shows. Julia Kantor, originally from the Ukraine, lived and studied in France where she discovered in French music a soul connection that still imbues every performance.  She entrances from the stage with a sultry voice and dynamic presence.  Together with her husband, Jacob, a Russian-born singer/songwriter, they launched Paris Chansons.  Max Cohen grew up in Morocco steeped in French music, particularly the songs of Enrico Macias.  Max’s rich velvety tone delivers beautifully nuanced renditions of his favorites, complete with a signature North African lilt.  Jean-Louis Darville, born in Paris, is not only a gifted vocalist but also a professional actor.  He approaches each song like a theatrical performance and lets the music take over, adding a unique spin to the beloved songs of Brel, Gainsbourg and Montand, among others.

“The sweetest voice in the current Jazz Scene. Period.”
-Arnaldo DeSouteiro, Jazz Station

“Lightly twisted, jazzy…”
-Los Angeles Times

“Add Mjöll's penchant for offbeat humor and a running dialogue with the audience, and you might find yourself wondering how long it'll be before she's headlining somewhere in Las Vegas — Sir Tom Jones is already a frequent guest at her shows in town.”
-Tom Meek, LA Weekly

"Iceland's gift to contemporary jazz vocalizing brings her unique style to songs that reach easily across the jazz boundaries".
-Don Heckman.

“More Mjöll please!”

“Icelandic jazz diva Anna Mjoll evokes Peggy Lee, Astrud Gilberto and Julie London, but fascinates with her highly personal interpretations.  She knows how to caress a melody and seduce the listener.”
-Palm Springs Live

“AM’s style is quite distinctive. A slightly smoke tinged sultry jazz base with a forward breathiness element … at times Anna evokes Blossom Dearie, at other times Madeleine Peyroux, even Astrud Gilberto a bit … but in the end AM stands on her own with her distinctive smokey, jazz club tenor.”
Steve Cox

"Iceland's gift to contemporary jazz vocalizing brings her unique style to songs that reach easily across the jazz boundaries".
-Don Heckman.

“Sexy sexy voice…”
-Julio Iglesias

"Do yourself a favor and catch her now, at an intimate small club, before she breaks out into larger venues.”
-Charles Andrews

Anna Mjöll has been voted one of the top five Jazz singers in the current Jazz scene by Arnaldo DeSouteiro's Jazz Station.

Anna Mjoll has released two albums with Tónaljón Records, Reykjavik, Iceland: .
“ Shadow of your smile” and “Christmas Jazzmaz".

Miss Mjöll is an Icelandic, seductive, sultry songstress with an exorbitant amount of sex appeal equaling Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield and the likes. On top of this she has a sharp edge, being quick witted with almost a psychopathic sense of humor. She has performed/recorded with some of the biggest names in the business all over the world. Her show, which my wife and I went to see at Herb Alpert's prestigious Jazz/Supper Club Vibrato in Bel Air, was nothing less than sensational. It was definitely the most entertaining show we have seen in years.

Miss Mjöll is by far the best interpreter of The American Songbook we have ever seen. Our list includes numerous world famous acts that shall go nameless here.
Do yourself a favor and go see The Anna Mjöll Show next time she performs. You will behappy you did."

Simba Records recording artist Frank Stallone is one of the most versatile actors, singers and musicians working today. His explosive voice and musicianship ranges from rock to blues to big band and has garnered him three Platinum Albums, ten Gold Albums and five Gold Singles.

Frank has acted in over 60 films and TV shows, including Tombstone and the cult hit Barfly in which he played the memorable “Eddie” the bartender, which was touted by critic Roger Ebert: “Barfly is a terrific film that features an outstanding performance by Frank Stallone.” He will be seen in the upcoming film Reach Me from director John Herzfeld and will soon be heard as “Thunderhoof” in Hasbro’s hit series Transformers.

Frank has written and published over 200 songs and, with the addition of Don’t Want to Fight With Me from The Expendables 2, has written and recorded compositions for 12 films, including Rocky I, II and III, Rambo II, Paradise Alley and Over the Top. But, it was Frank's nine songs that he wrote and recorded for the Saturday Night Fever Sequel Staying Alive that earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Sound Track and a Grammy nomination for Best Original Song with his single, Far From Over. That song became a massive number#1 hit around the world, stayed on the top charts for more than four months and is still played on radio stations throughout the world.

Frank has recorded nine solo albums receiving praise from legends Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Sammy Cahn. His rock-influenced Full Circle, “which I feel is my best” was followed by his American songbook albums, In Love in Vain, with Sammy Nestico, Stallone on Stallone by Request, a compilation of Frank's film soundtrack tunes, and Songs from the Saddle, showing Frank’s more acoustic side. He’s a big fan favorite in Australia and he performs in concert halls, theaters and clubs all around the world, gaining critical acclaim wherever he goes “he has the crowd enthralled.” (New York Daily News).

Bob Mintzer Big Band featuring Peter Erskine

Cover: $25 // Show: 8:00pm

The extraordinary saxophonist/composer Bob Mintzer and master drummer Peter Erskine go back nearly 50 years since their high school days in a big band at the renowned Interlochen Arts Academy. Afterwards, when Bob was in Buddy Rich’s big band and Peter worked with Stan Kenton and Maynard Ferguson, their paths crossed often. But in the 1980s in New York City, their big band collaborating took full root, resulting in numerous projects over the years. Now both of them are in Los Angeles and the outstanding new album Bob Mintzer – All L.A. Band on Fuzzy Music is the latest gem to blossom from this fruitful relationship.

Joined by some of the finest musicians on the L.A. scene for ten marvelous tracks, they have added another component that is both ambitious and ingenious to the mix. Through Fuzzy Music Mobile, they have developed a new app that brings the stimulating big band experience directly to students and musicians, allowing them to play along, record and mix their own versions of this inspired music. Where most play-along products allow the user to music-minus two or three tracks, this new app allows the user to minus (or solo) virtually any of the instruments involved in the recording. Each part can be printed directly from the app, and resultant play-along recordings can be mailed to teachers, colleagues and friends.

But the primary treasure is in the music itself, whether participating through the app or simply enjoying the remarkable music contained in this album. Bob and Peter are joined by 15 splendid musicians – a trumpet section of Wayne Bergeron, James Blackwell, John Thomas, Chad Willis and Michael Stever; Bob McChesney, Erik Hughes, Julianne Gralle and Craig Gosnell on trombones; Bob Sheppard on alto and Adam Schroeder on baritone join Bob in the reed section; pianist (and Bob’s fellow Yellowjackets colleague) Russ Ferrante; guitarist Larry Koonse; Edwin Livingston on bass and Aaron Serfaty on percussion. In addition to playing drums, Peter also supervised the project and produced the recording.

The collaborative relationship between Mintzer and Erskine is the central nervous system upon which this entire journey is constructed. Bob’s exceptional tenor is the primary story teller in the plot and theme provided by his brilliant compositions and arrangements. His writing is highly imaginative and wonderfully textured with layer upon layer of sonic brushstrokes painted on the canvas. Call and response, thrust and parry, multi-leveled conversation and bold counterpoint create harmonic and rhythmic structure and tension that challenge in contemporary fashion while remaining thoroughly musical in the finest traditions of the big band legacy from Basie and Ellington to Charles Mingus and George Russell.

Sherry Williams

Cover: $20 // Show: 8pm

Due to a cancellation, Sherry Williams will be performing this evening.

The buttery voice of Sherry Williams is an oasis in any madness our world offers. When you listen to her you realize immediately that she is a consummate artist - the real thing. Williams is what they called in the old days, a storyteller - she paints pictures with words.  Yet she bridges the gap between the past and the present.  Her masterful interpretation of the lyrics makes an over worn song meaningful, or brings an unknown song to life as is evidenced in her latest release You Must Believe In Spring.  There she blends the straightforward elements of traditional pop with a decidedly mainstream jazz execution. "At each performance, my delivery is a little different, because I have experienced that additional kernel of life which changes everything; my point of view, my attitudes... My entire life experience is the point of reference from which I sing a song. I believe my gift is the ability to draw on that experience, be fully present in the moment, and unabashedly share it with the listener."  And this is who she really is - open and accessible.

It seems as though Sherry was destined to sing this kind of music. When she was a young girl in Pittsburgh, where she was born, her father often blew into his trombone mouthpiece as he moved around the house. He had a collection of 78 LPs of the big bands of the day, as well as many of the great smaller groups like Shearing, Brubeck and Hampton.  Growing up with this music, along with having classical piano lessons from age six to age sixteen, formed her musical sensibilities. She swings relentlessly, and sings ballads with exquisite phrasing and taste. In her second release, A Taste Of Sherry, she does a version of the poignantly beautiful Lush Life that will make you cry.

Recently Sherry had been working on a project with the late Jack Segal (When Sunny Gets Blue) to record some of his lesser known songs. She considers him and his material to be American Treasure and will continue with the project.

Her passion for well crafted music and her superb vocal ability clearly place her in a category in which few artists have arrived, and though she emerges from the shadows of the great ladies that have gone on before her, her style is unmistakably her own.
